Jo Mao

What excites you right now?

The sounds of a V12 naturally aspirated engine. It can be found in older cars across a few different car brands, but the Ferrari 812 Competizione launched last has been the most recent use. Sadly, it is very rare now, especially as many car manufacturers turn to electric vehicles.

Favourite holiday spot?

Montreux in Switzerland. It is such a lovely town on the shoreline of Lake Geneva at the foot of the Alps, so the scenery is spectacular.

Last good book, podcast or film?

The last good book was, The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company by Robert Iger.

Who has been your biggest mentor?

Thus far in my career, I would have to say, Mr Wan Li, the Managing Partner of Seyfarth Shaw LLP Shanghai office. Previously he was the managing partner of MinterEllison Shanghai office, and he has provided me with significant advice and guidance.

What is the best piece of advice you can give lawyers starting out today?

Be patient, never stop learning and pay attention to the details.

What are you looking forward to?

Working with different lawyers and clients across a variety of matters and continuing to learn and develop.

What do you enjoy most about working with your clients?

I enjoy learning about and understanding our clients’ business and what drives their commercial decisions.
