- Prospective directors must obtain a director ID number before appointment.
- Existing directors must obtain their director ID numbers by 30 November 2022.
Last year, the Commonwealth Government introduced the requirement that directors of Australian corporations (registered under the Corporations Act 2001 or Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006)) must obtain director ID numbers. You can read more about the key features of the director ID requirement here.
At this stage of the roll-out, anyone becoming a director of a company for the first time will need to ensure that they obtain a director ID number before they are appointed.
Directors who were appointed between 1 November 2021 and 4 April 2022 were required to apply for a DIN within 28 days of appointment. If you fall within this category and have not yet obtained a director ID number, you may have been contacted by The Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS) to remind you of your obligation to obtain a director ID number. If you are having difficulty obtaining a director ID number, you can apply for an extension of time by submitting the form available on the ABRS website.
Any existing directors who were appointed on or before 31 October 2021 must apply for their own director ID number by 30 November 2022.
