James Turnbull is a newly promoted Senior Associate in our Construction & Projects group.
What does your promotion mean to you?
I believe it is the firm’s recognition of the hard work, level of accomplishment, experience and high quality of client service I have demonstrated in my practice.
The Senior Associate position is universally recognised within our profession and I believe it provides a level of confidence and a benchmark to our clients and colleagues.
What are you looking forward to in your new position?
I look forward to continuing to work with ongoing clients to achieve outstanding results and to contribute further to my team.
What advice would you give to newly qualified lawyers?
Take responsibility for creating your own learning opportunities and make the most of the experience and knowledge of those around you, including senior lawyers and the barristers that you work with.
Take advantage of every opportunity to make new contacts, the benefit grows over time.
Get involved as much as possible, join industry associations and participate in events, particularly those that expand your legal and technical expertise in your area of practice. In our profession, the more you invest in yourself, the more you get out of your career in terms of your skill-set, results and satisfaction.
Who has been your biggest mentor?
My mother, who taught me the importance of determination and focus. I have also been fortunate to benefit from the teaching of excellent Principals at the firms in which I’ve worked as well as strong working relationships with counsel.
Who was the first person you called to tell about your promotion?
My wife, who promptly posted the news in our family’s WhatsApp group and then it was well and truly on the grapevine.
How will you celebrate your promotion?
My wife and I had a nice dinner from Tipo 00.
