Holly Walker is a Lawyer in our Customs & Trade team.
Holly shares her best advice for lawyers starting out and some interesting facts about herself.
What excites you right now?
What excites me right now is the fact that I have just landed my dream job here at the firm, where I will be practicing in an area of law that I find incredibly fascinating! I am excited to learn the ins and outs of the Customs & Trade industry and of course of being a lawyer. It is certainly scary facing this challenge, but with the support of my incredible mentor Andrew Hudson and our amazing assistant Zoe Stephens, anything is possible!
What is an interesting fact about yourself?
I actually play football (AFL) for Mornington Football and Netball Club in their Division 1 women’s team. Many people don’t believe me when I tell them, but it is true! I may be small, but I am quick!
Why did you choose law and your practice area?
I wanted to do law long before finishing high school and went straight into my Bachelor of Laws (Hons) upon graduating. I wanted to do law because it gives you the power to be able to help people, whether that be volunteering in the community at Legal Aid or helping your clients with their business goals, it is incredibly rewarding.
What is the best piece of advice you can give lawyers starting out today?
I know how hard it can be to get a job, let alone one in the area you are passionate about, particularly in the current climate. I graduated in 2019 and am practicing for the first-time mid-way through 2021. If you really want it, you will need to put in the extra time and effort to network, reach out to people working in the area, write articles, do some specialised study etc. It may take months or even years, but all those things will help you in eventually landing that dream job!
What are your goals for the remainder of 2021?
This year’s focus for me is on learning. My goal is to learn as much as possible about the Cusomts & Trade industry, get to know my clients and reach some first-year lawyer milestones!
