Professional biography:
Ian has been a commercial lawyer at the firm since completing his articles in 1982 with Rigby & Fielding. He became a partner of the firm in 1988 and is the head of our Commercial team.
He is a member of the Law Institute of Victoria and the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand.
Ian has also been a Board Member of Monash Oncology Research Institute since inception in 1994 and was appointed Chairman in 2002.
Significant experience:
- Development, management, protection and exploitation of intellectual property, including all aspects of trade marks, copyright, confidential information and patents (other than patent applications), and including registration, protection, licensing and exploitation, acquisition and disposal. This includes the development and certification trade mark protection of the 5 Star trade mark and rating system for use in more than 10,000 temporary accommodation properties throughout Australia.
- Developing relationship agreements around such intellectual property
- Establishment of the ‘Show Your Card & Save’ discount rewards program available to over 6 million members of the Australian automobile clubs
- Commercial agreements and disputes, including mergers and acquisitions, business models and structures, business relationship agreements and corporate restructures, such as the restructure of the Australian Motoring Services Group (the national commercial arm of the Australian automobile clubs) and the sale of a leading Australian sports supplement and food business, Musashi, to multinational Nestlé
- Wide experience and expertise in hardware and software development and management, as well as internet and e-Commerce aspects of information technology
- Traditional IT issues, including hardware and/or software development, licensing, distribution, re-branding and consultancy agreements
- Contemporary IT issues, including content licensing, web site development, web site hosting, linking, co-branding and advertising agreements
